IB Diploma Programme

At Hockerill all sixth form students study the prestigious International Baccalaureate Programme.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is a comprehensive and rigorous pre-university course of study particularly designed for students aged 16 to 19. It's recognized and respected worldwide for its academic depth, emphasis on critical thinking, and international perspective. Beow is a breakdown of the key components:

  1. Curriculum: The IB Diploma Programme encompasses six subject groups, allowing students to study a range of disciplines including languages, sciences, mathematics, humanities, and the arts. These subjects are studied over two years.

  2. Core Requirements:

    • Theory of Knowledge (TOK): A course that explores the nature of knowledge across disciplines and encourages critical thinking about the ways in which we acquire knowledge.
    • Extended Essay (EE): A 4,000-word independent research essay on a topic of the student's choice, offering an opportunity to engage deeply with a subject area.
    • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): A requirement for students to engage in a range of activities outside the classroom, promoting personal growth, community service, and experiential learning.

  3. Assessment: Students are assessed through a combination of internal assessment by their teachers and external examinations. These assessments are designed to evaluate students' understanding, analytical skills, and ability to apply knowledge across different contexts.

  4. Scoring and Recognition: Students can earn a maximum of 45 points from their six subject scores and core components. The diploma is awarded to students who earn at least 24 points, complete the core requirements satisfactorily, and meet certain other criteria. Universities and colleges worldwide recognise the IB Diploma for admission purposes, and many offer credit or advanced standing to IB Diploma holders.
