The Language College

Learning and life in general require a common language. It is language that enables people, communities and cultures to come together for a successful co-existence. Our Language College endeavours to provide all our students with the essential life skill of communication in foreign languages.

All students at Hockerill study at least two foreign languages to GCSE level, many students in our bilingual section pass their GCSE examinations with top marks in year 9 and continue their foreign language study by taking an A level course in years 10 and 11.

The language tuition is supplemented by our extensive and excellent programme of trips and exchanges which gives our students every year the opportunity to experience the culture and people in the target language country.

Our Faculty of 16 staff demonstrates internationalism by example with its members originating from Britain, Columbia, France, Germany and Japan. Most of the staff teach at least two subjects, several in faculties outside Languages such as Humanities, Music and Maths and thereby promote automatically the spirit of cross curricular teaching and learning. The teaching is supported by 8 foreign language assistants and the Language College Manager. We also send two teachers to our eight primary partner schools to support them with their provision of foreign languages teaching.

Our aim is to educate young people who:

  • … can communicate successfully in at least two foreign languages.
  • … have experienced and enjoy the cultural differences of communities.
  • … and operate confidently and successfully in an international environment.

Community

The Language College is committed to the provision of language learning in our local community. This provision is varied and reflects a commitment to lifelong learning from primary school through to adult education.

After College Classes for Primary students

The Language College’s long established language classes provide extra tuition in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Japanese for local children. The classes are free and the aim is to show that language learning is fun and communicating can be easy. The teachers use the target language method and our own sixth formers help in class providing useful experience for them and extra fun for the younger ones.

Language Masterclasses

Year 6 and year 10 students from local schools who are progressing well in French and German are invited to join a Masterclass on Saturday mornings. These classes are run by our staff at an accelerated pace and the Year 10 course culminates in a trip to France or Germany.

Foreign Language Support in the Community

For many years now the Language College has supported the teaching of French in the local community. We provide language professionals to our Primary and Secondary partners promoting language learning in the area as a whole. Staff training in the provision of French is offered to a number of partner primary schools.
