This fortnight the award goes to Abigail Prowse. Abi always demonstrates very impressive levels of motivation and achievement in English. She makes highly valuable contributions in class discussion and is always engaged and enthusiastic about her work.

On the 14th November 2011 nineteen students from Hockerill Anglo-European College spent the day with a team of Magdalene College Cambridge undergraduates led by Phyllida O’Neil to taste ‘a day in the life of a student’. The Year 12 students from Hockerill visited Pathology lectures, History talks and participated in laboratory experiments while shadowing their counterpart volunteer from Magdalene, the College of Samuel Pepys. Vitally, the VI form students gained a behind the scenes look at the supervision system in place in Cambridge before capping the day by visiting, and participating in, Evensong at King’s College.
The day was arranged as part of HAEC’s attempt to encourage the best and brightest to aim high and apply for the UK’s finest universities. HAEC extended their gratitude to Ms. Silke Mentchen and Master Duncan Robinson of Magdalene for their help in facilitating the day.
Silke Mentchen, the Senior Language Teaching Officer in the German Department at the University of Cambridge’s Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages, Fellow of Magdalene College, Director of Studies and Admissions Tutor described our students as “surprisingly fresh, switched on and interested”.

Hockerill was selected to compete in the UKMT Teams competition at the School of Mathematical Sciences, Cambridge University. It was an eye opening experience and the old adage that “mathematicians are machines that turn caffeine into theorems” was amply demonstrated in the café like surroundings of this most prestigious faculty. The students had a wonderful time and achieved a 9th place out of 31 teams which is a great achievement not to be in any way diminished by the fact that next year’s team will perform even more creditably. The photograph shows the team doing some heavy duty thinking outside the University Library.
An early start today as the BBC film crew rolled up at 5:30am to film for BBC Breakfast and BBC News Channel. The stations were interested in our students looking at universities overseas in addition to the UK. Along with Mr Simon Dennis and Mrs Janice Chalmers, Sixth Formers Keir Baldwin, Alex George and Foluso Shoneyin were interviewed about their plans for the future.
